Chapter Thirteen
Skye
I tried to take life one day at a time. Every second felt like a minute, and ever minute felt like an hour. I hoped this would get easier as time went by. Not having Cayson around was agonizing. The fact I couldnât call him whenever I felt like it was worse. That would make things so much easier.
I was in my office at work, trying to pass the time with mounds of paperwork. Whenever there was something to do, I snatched it up like it was a great opportunity even if I wasnât required to.
My dad kept a close eye on me, always finding things to talk about with me. He took me to lunch and talked about anything that had nothing to do with Cayson. He was always in a good mood, probably trying to cheer me up.
I was sitting at my desk when my computer beeped. The Skype program opened on its own and said I had an incoming call.
âOh my god.â
I immediately grabbed the mouse and accepted the call. A week had come and gone and I hadnât heard from Cayson. There was only one person who would call me via Skype, and it was the man who made my heart race like I might have a heart attack and collapse.
Caysonâs face came onto the screen. It was dark in the room and it looked like he was in a tent. His hair was messy and not styled like it usually was. He wore a t-shirt and that was all I could see of him. His eyes were just as blue as before. He took me in for a long moment before he released a sigh. âBabyâ¦â
My eyes naturally moistened but I wouldnât let the tears fall. This was hard for me but I knew it was much harder for him. He was in another country without any friends or family. He was totally alone. At least I had that. âHeyâ¦â
âItâs so nice to see your faceâ¦youâre so beautiful.â He stared at me without blinking, like I was a work of art that would be taken away at any moment.
âI miss you.â I stared into his eyes and saw the sadness deep within.
âI miss you too,â he said quietly.
âHow are things?â I tried to keep it as light as possible. Letting the sadness get to both of us would just make this harder.
âItâs okay,â he said. âIâll be on the move tomorrow and Iâm meeting my leader. Heâll be escorting me everywhere I need to go.â
âThatâll be nice.â
âYeahâ¦â
âAre you doing okay?â
âIâm fine,â he said. âIâm well taken care of and safe. You donât need to worry about me.â
That made me feel better. âIâm glad to hear that.â
âI miss you,â he repeated. âSo much.â
âI miss you too.â I wish I could touch him through the screen. Even feeling just his hand would make me feel better.
âHow are things with you?â
âGood. Slade and Trinity moved in with me the moment you left.â
Surprise flashed across his face. âMoved in with you?â
âYeah.
